Week long BLOG stalking log.
BLOG #1
http://europeanethnocentrism.blogspot.com/
Given the recent elections and change of governmental powers in Canada, I was searching
http://www.blogger.com/ for any Canadian content and/or other frustrated Canadian liberals: I ended up at this strange blog titled ‘European Ethnocentrism’, and even though the title was creepy…I continued to read the blog postings and they were actually interesting containing often times random but entertaining comments about current international news events. Therefore, if I gained nothing else from this blogger’s perspective, I at least updated my current news issues (“Gene Explains Asians' Resistance to Angina Drug” ) and had a laugh or two with respect to the blog posting “Canada: This Union can’t be Saved”. This blog is updated daily and from what I observed, often has several posts a day. I enjoyed that the blogger actually provides the original content/news article source after his commentary so that the passerby blog visitor is not left believing his summary and opinion of the issue. The visual organization of the blog is simple and clean with a white background, and posts clearly highlighted in the right margin. This made it very easy and pleasant to navigate.
BLOG #2
http://www.littlehappybunnies.com/
Although an entirely random blog with regards to content, this was an interesting (and equally disturbing) place to visit because it had various blog technology applications (new…at least for me) in use regularly by the user such as podcasts, blogrolling, and a photoblog. I am also learning that an RSS feed must be something normal, but I don’t quite know what. I still get a little afraid to go clicking too many things because I never know what is going to happen to my computer.
The content being updated was, for the most part, personal comments or item posting about random things such as the lyrics and a sound file for “This land is your land…”, which was kind of fun to turn on and listen to while reading strange posts on the little happy bunnies blog. Odd enough, I think I may become a regular visitor.
The layout of the blog however, is a bit dull. It could use a better color scheme and style. The current grey, white and orange leaves much to be desired.
BLOG #3
http://onedrawingperday.blogspot.com/
This blog features one different art graphic drawing daily and is accompanied by a quote reflective of the drawing. The drawings are in a style similar to that of Neil Gaiman, a british graphic artist/novelist. As a result of my visits to this blog, I have revisited the topic of blogrolling, as people often write the blogger to ask permission to blogroll, which I still don’t entirely understand: a link to other blogs? an advanced blog of sorts? a way for blogaholics to keep blogging?
Regardless, I chose this blog because I’m a fan of Neil Gaiman and so I enjoyed the way it placed the visual focus on the graphic art by providing medium to large size images.

NOTE: Everyone should have an anti-virus and a firewall...obviously I'm blogging this from a personal experience. I got Trojaned the other day on my PC...nasty virus. what a mess. Alberto and Joy had to rescue me and the PC...it's all bajo control now, thankfully.

Priceville footbridge...

I spent some of my best summers truckin across this bridge and swimming in the Miramichi...setting off my Grandma's mouse traps and visiting the fam with Dad...

The Maritimes are good times!

Life is sweet, floating down the Miramichi, headed under the Priceville footbridge and past Gram's house...does it get any better?

Priceville, New Brunswick Canada Summer 2005

Good times!

PS- Yes, this is a toy raft (for children, max weight: 100 pounds...and I rode her for a good 3 km over some small rapids without incident...she's now under the care of Keisha and Val!)

PPS- Yes, I weigh a lot more than 100 pounds...and I had beer in the raft! HA!

My bad for not giving props to ALBERTO MENDEZ...he is responsible for almost all of the great photography here...especially the AQUARIUM fotos! Thanks Alberto!!

My Mum is learning about blogs...ie: I'm forcing her to because I keep making her visit mine to see pictures, so I thought I would leave some quotes especially for her...she's a labour and delivery nurse and she's working tonight...hopefully these will entertain you Mom if it's a hellish night! Love always, Kate.

AJ and Matt working hard muddin' a house in Louisiana...
TIFLE me timbers: 'tis a bit chilly today...ok, since we are to be blogging weekly now about technology, I have yet another comment to make: I can't wait until we cover FTP in class because I attempted to reload my Plaza website and I cannot figure it out for the life of me. That's right, it's only been about 2 months and I have forgotten.
Makes me think of what my Mom says about Flaunt it while you have it (she says that because I am a very healthy eater haha...probably why she always sends me clothes that are 2 sizes too big if she hasn't seen me for a while and fears that I've put on a few kilos)...back to the point--> Use it before you lose it (You have to keep working with FTP or that info leaves your brain on permanent vacation)...Ayayayay...what's a pobre tifler to do?

Ok, so, I have something else. Death. This is a graphic novel series by the brit Neil Gaiman that I started reading in grade nine. I've never really been in to comics...this is really different...the content is phenomenal...Death is the main character (Sandman series) and she is, amazing. Just thought I'd include this foto in case you didn't know about Death and needed to be edu-macated...

Mr. Ralph (or is it Norton), the whale shark accompanied by a few friends while passing over the tunnel in the aquarium.

Matt, Kate and Joy...on the way to the Atlanta aquarium with Alberto. We went into the CNN building to eat, very cool. Funny though... it was freezing cold that day, we saw snow flurries and yet none of us are wearing a real jacket!
I found myself in front of a recent Newsweek today and this is a bit about what I read...interesting...technology is all around...for better or worse...

Newsweek February 13, 2006
The Technologist by Steven Levy (p 14):

"Google and the China Syndrome"
-Rep. Tom Lantos, a California democrat and holocaust survivor, had a message to Yahoo, Microsoft and Google at a public briefing last week: "These massively successful high tech companies...should be ashamed". He was speaking of the way these Internet giants are cooperating with the Chinese government to stifle free speech. Google recently launched a China based search engine with built-in censorship of critical political content, news sites and information about democracy. At Chinese insistence, Microsoft (which also filters by Chinese rules) has also shut down the blog of a dissident urging democracy. And Yahoo...apparently provided information to China that helped it to identify a journalist writing anonymously about human-rights abuses; the man is now serving 10 years in jail for this "crime".-

Levy goes on to state that through discussions with people at these companies, he feels that they are ashamed...however given the fact that China, with 130 million internet users, is second only to the US... for many of these companies ignoring China would clearly be unthinkable.

Furthermore...many of these companies feel that they are in fact helping to bring "the tremendous benefits of universal access to all our users there"...

So...doing business under such terms...adding fuel to the fire or chipping away subversively at the "Great Fire-wall of China"?

As the Mad Hatter said (from what I remember): Verrrrrrrry Interesting...

Darn FRAUDULENT egyptian name translation website!!! Yes, that's right! In a recent post, I had some hieroglyphs that supposedly represented my name...come to find through John (Thanks John!), that it's all wrong! It's probably some scam...yeah... where idiots (or suckers like me) post this stuff and it really says jack@ss or something to the effect LOL...
Ok so I have learned two things as of late:
1) Don't listen to your chocolate wrappers...
2) Do not post egyptian hieroglyphs that you cannot decipher on your own!!
LOL
-Buen fin de semana para todos!

Can I TIFLE you about AUDIOBLOGGING--> So, while we've been updating our blog knowledge in class, Joy had a great idea...create audioblog messages for our students so they can practice comprension auditiva for tests and preguntas orales for their oral exam...fun!

This is my crazy cousin Matt Price...I thought he deserved to be included in this blog biz. My cousin Julie is up next, but first I need a foto! They are from New Brunswick, Canada...true maritime spirit!!

Let me TIFLE you about my ideas...
Research brainstorming paths:
I was originally thinking about how I could further an investigation concerning CMC and Cultural awareness/interaction. I personally have enjoyed my experience in the Language lab with SPN 1130 and 1131 classes at UF because they attempt to combine technology and cultural connections…so I thought, hmmm…how could the combination of CMC Culture be most effective when concerning Blogs, Chats, language lab activities etc. How does the L2 teacher successfully incorporate these mediums into the classroom activities whereby they maintain relevance and efficacy? How do you measure the success/hindrance?
So from this preliminary brainstorming I began to wander toward the thought of L2 distance learning. How the heck do those students do it at home, on their computer, all alone?? While studying independently is there any real cultural connection? Would improved CMC cultural activities/connections improve the learning experience??
This path started for me because I have an ex-student from SPN 1130 who got married to an Australian in what she thought was her last semester…come to find, she needs to take SPN 1131 but had already planned her move to Australia. So she decides to finish SPN 1131 through internet distance learning while she’s starting her new life in Aussielandia. Every now and then she would write me with some question and I would email her a response or we would chat through MSN…I gave a mini lesson on the subjunctive one night through MSN…that was fun!
But I digress…I began to wonder about how L2 distance learning programs could be improved through the mix of CMC, CMC cultural oriented activities, online Spanish TA’s / ‘virtual tutors’ etc.My next question was, what about the existing success rate of hybrid Spanish classes at Universities and Community colleges?

First soccer season...I'm looking pretty serious...probably because a girl tried to get in a fight with me...whatever...I tripped her! Just kidding!!

VAL AND KEISHA!! Love you guys!!!

Love my sis!!

100 Portraits - Mercy moves me...
this song is happiness...find it and listen to it...
-Thanks MWL...I can't sleep at night because this song is on repeat. lol. jota ka.
A TIFLE tifler of tifleing: my thoughts on TIFLE are positive...I want to learn more about the technological resources and support available to me as an L2 teacher. Once I know how to comfortably use these resources, I hope to be able to maximize the L2 learning experience for my students...However, I do not wish to use technology just because it is available...it must serve a purpose, just like the class activities that I select as part of my lesson plan. I know...boring right--> NO... it's about being effective...technology is a tool...not a classroom crutch.
In short:
1. I'm a blogger now...
2. The Laffords are cool
3. Mark Warschauer should be our next TIFLE virtual guest

Passport control quote for life:
"I have nothing to declare but my genius"
-Oscar Wilde
Note to self/question: When your chocolate wrappers start giving you advice...and you listen, is that strange? Should you change chocolate?! ie: "Buy yourself flowers", "Remember your first everything", "Don't think about it so much", "You're allowed to do nothing"...
PS- I just ate four Dove chocolates as part of the investigation/blog recording process.

Shanesya and Lena, en Ticolandia! Que Guapas!!

So I was telling Matt yester eve about a book that Andreia brought me back a few years ago from her time in Vietnam: Peace is Every Step by Thich nhat hanh.
Matt had definitely already been introduced to hanh's work, and so I re-read a section that I remembered near the beginning:
"A tiny bud of a smile on our lips nourishes awareness and calms us miraculously. It returns to us the peace we thought we had lost" (hanh 7).
What a fine and simple reminder of how great the smile is.
At 6:29 I jumped out of bed this morning...I beat my alarm! That's a good morning. My internal clock apparently is taking to the 7:25 class schedule, which, unfortunately, is clearly disturbing...
On the flip side...one of these mornings, I'm going to call and wake my Dad up, and it's not often I get to beat my Dad to a wake up call! hahaha....good times.
